Why is roland chasing the man in black

The Dark Tower is like a giant bathtub stopper; if removed, everything drains away. Both the Crimson King and the Man in Black aim to reach the top of the tower and remake all existence to their liking. That, they topple it. The problem is the physical representation of the tower only exists in one reality, thus the world-hopping escapades.

In the books, the only reason the tower is in trouble at all is because folks replaced the infallible magic of the Beams with technology. At the start of the story, several Beams are broken, and more are in danger. Those who have read the books will know exactly what that means, but for those that haven't; think of it as a retelling of all the books with plenty of differences thrown in, and plenty taken out. The essence of the tale remains the same, though; a battle of good versus evil.

On the good side, is Roland Deschain Idris Elba. Roland is the last in a long line of gunslingers hailing from Gilead in Mid-World.

Essentially the role of a gunslinger is a kind of old-style Wild West Cowboy law enforcement, but Roland is exceptionally skilled and life has led him on a quest to reach the Dark Tower before the Man in Black.

He wants to destroy the tower, and, as is mentioned often in the books, he is both chasing and being chased by, Roland. Knowing who is behind the entire mess, Peter manages to escape the Needle and with his allies goes to retrieve King Roland's bow and kill Flagg. Upon reaching Delain's royal chamber they find no bow and Flagg reveals his demonic qualities to them.

Flagg is about to kill Peter and his allies when Thomas intervened with the royal bow. He shoots Flagg in the eye but the dark wizard uses magic to disappear, escaping them. Shortly after, Thomas who has become hated throughout Delain leaves with a friend, Dennis, to go and track Flagg who is on the run.

It is said that eventually, they confront him, but the outcome is not revealed. Hot on his heels had come two young men who looked desperate and yet grim, men named Dennis and Thomas The Covenant Man is responsible for collecting taxes, and if not paid in full, is willing to take people's possessions and throw them out of their homes. The Covenant Man befriends a young Tim Ross following his father's death that was believed to have been caused by a dragon , and helps him uncover the truth of his father's mysterious death.

It was Tim's stepfather, Big Kells , who killed his father. Tim finds this out with a key that The Covenant Man gives him that will open any lock, but only once. Tim opens Big Ross' trunk and finds his father's lucky coin. The beating leaves his mother blind, and The Covenant Man shows Tim another vision: Tim visiting Maerlyn and obtaining a magic blindfold that heals his mother's sight. Tim departs on the journey. He later finds a tyger that turns out to be Maerlyn, transformed by an agent of the Crimson King Maerlyn admits this happened because he was drunk at the time.

This could be due to his identity being so obvious, even Eddie or any of the 20th Century members feel no need to bring it up. Another solution is that while Roland's narrative conveys this to the reader, the story he is telling of Tim Ross is actually being told in the verse his mother taught him, and, to the Roland of the past, the identity is not anything he would know. Many explanations are possible, but it is notable that, even euphemized in the frame of what passes for a fairy-tale in Mid-World, Roland fails to recognize the one who has bedeviled him.

When Roland was a young boy, Flagg, under the name of Marten Broadcloak, orchestrated a devious plan of treachery in service of the Crimson King. Marten became the court magician of Gilead , acting as chief advisor to his father Steven , seducing Roland's mother Gabrielle , exposing this to Roland on purpose.

This enraged Roland to the point that he decided to take his coming of age gunslinger trial at the unheard of age of Jake Chambers makes a very different journey to Mid-World. The version that we see in the movie is most closely related to the second time it happens in the novels. Jake's actual first trip to Mid-World happens when Jake takes a more direct route. He dies. In the first book, Roland and Jake meet when Roland comes upon a Way Station in the middle of the desert where Jake is hiding out.

He has no real memory of how he came to be there and it's not until Roland hypnotizes the boy that he remembers being pushed off the sidewalk and falling beneath the wheels of an oncoming car. He woke up in the Way Station. Jake never dies in the new movie. Roland knows who he's chasing.

Roland informs Jake when they first meet that the Man in Black is actually a man named Walter. In The Gunslinger , Roland refers to the man he's chasing as The Man in Black for a very simple reason -- he doesn't know the man's name. He actually has no idea who he's chasing.

He knows that he must catch The Man in Black, that he has information Roland needs in order to reach the Dark Tower, but it's not until the end, when the two finally stand face to face, that Roland learns who the man is. Jake survives the story. With Jake's family dead in the film, he makes the decision to accompany Roland back to Mid-World. It's a much happier ending for Jake then what really happens to him in the first novel.

After a treacherous trip through a mountain cave, Jake and Roland finally reach daylight on the other side. The Man in Black is waiting but as they race to catch him Jake nearly falls. With Jake hanging on for dear life Roland must decide to either save the boy and lose his chance to catch the man he's been chasing, or let the boy fall, and continue his quest for the tower.

Roland chooses the Tower. The Tower is saved. The most interesting thing about The Dark Tower film is that, at the end of it, the Tower is safe.
